How To Prepare For The Australian Citizen Test
How To Prepare For The Australian Citizen Test
You’ve come a long way. Deciding to move to Australia is no small feat, and the actual move can be quite overwhelming. And now, there’s the Australian Citizen test, which you might be dreading. It’s been a while since you’ve had to study for a test, and it might feel like you’re back in school, except this time, your citizenship is at stake.
Questions in the citizenship test are based on:
- Australia and its people
- Australia’s democratic beliefs, rights, and liberties
- Government and the law in Australia
- An understanding and commitment to Australian values based on freedom, respect, and equality
What do I need to bring to the Australian Citizen Test?
The online application for the test asks for numerous supporting documents and requires identity verification. Whatever documents you submitted during the application process, make sure to bring them to the test. While they may not require most of these documents, it’s wise to be prepared in case there’s a discrepancy in their system. The last thing you’d want is to be informed that you can’t take the test on that day.
Do I need to study for the test?
Absolutely! Preparation is key. While the test itself isn’t overly difficult, the information isn’t something you’d typically know without studying. So, don’t stress too much. Just visit the Immigration website and download the study booklet titled “Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond.” Everything you need to know is in this booklet, and all the questions will be based on its content. You won’t need to study anything beyond what’s in this book. Towards the end of the booklet, you’ll find a practice test that you can use for preparation, and the actual test is quite similar to it.
If you find that you need more assistance, there are plenty of apps available with test examples to help you prepare. Download and practice every day.
Don’t forget the values
A few years ago, they introduced a new section into the Australian Citizen Test, regarding the Australian values. These are incredibly important. If you pass everything else in the test, but fail a values question, you’ll fail the entire test. Don’t worry, the value questions are easy to understand and they’re all in the Our Common Bond booklet.
What happens on the day?
When you arrive at the citizenship test centre, a staff member will conduct an interview with you, capture your photograph, and verify your identity. If you meet the interview requirements, you’ll proceed to take the test, which is administered on a tablet or computer. If you encounter any difficulties during the test, there will be a staff member available to assist you. You’ll have a 45-minute window to complete the test, and you’ll receive immediate feedback on whether you pass or fail.
If you happen to fail, there’s no need to worry. You’ll have the opportunity to retake the test, possibly on the same day. On the other hand, if you pass, you will be contacted at a later date to attend the citizenship ceremony and receive your Australian citizenship certificate.
You’ve come a long way, and now all that’s left is to successfully pass your test and attain your citizenship. Don’t let it overwhelm you; simply read the study booklet and practice. Before you know it, you’ll be attending your citizenship ceremony.
