Australian Visas Eligible for Medicare

One of the most amazing parts of living in Australia is that you will have access to some of the world’s leading healthcare services and get access to some of the best healthcare infrastructure in the world. To get ready for your move to Australia, it would be wise for you to look into the different Australian visas eligible for Medicare.

What Are The Different Australian Visas Eligible for Medicare

Once you are in Australia you should apply for Medicare and apply to get a Medicare card as soon as you are able to. But before you do this, you will first need to make sure that you will be eligible for Medicare based on the visa you were granted when entering Australia. The good news is that most of the work visa pathways for skilled migrants will allow you to apply for Medicare once you are in Australia.

With the following visas, migrants are eligible to apply for Medicare once the visa has been granted and you are in Australia:

  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191)
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)
  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494)

What Information You Should Provide To Medicare

Once you are in the country it is important that you have the correct documentation prepared to provide to Medicare, to ensure that your application process goes as smoothly as possible.

  • Have a completed Medicare enrolment application form (3101). This can be found on the Department of Health Services website.
  • Documents that can help to identify you i.e., Passport, Birth certificate, Drivers Licence.
  • Travel documents like your passport.
  • Information to help show your current visa status.
  • Acknowledgement of application received.
  • A grant notification, showing the names of the applicant/s.
  • The VEVO of your current visa and the conditions of it.
  • A bridging visa.

What if Your Visa Does Not Get Approved?

In the unfortunate event that your visa does not get approved, you will be able to lodge an appeal. However, during this time you will still be able to apply for Medicare. The process will be more difficult though since you are going through the appeal process.
